Wednesday met The Weeknd! Singer Abel Tesfaye will make his film debut with Jenna Ortega

The Weeknd is set to make his feature debut alongside The Wednesday star Jenna Ortega in a new surprise project, Deadline reports.

The singer, 33, will star alongside Ortega, 20 and The Banshees of Inisherin star Barry Keoghan, 30, in the new film, which will be directed by Trey Edward Shults, from a script written with the singer and Reza Fahim.

The Weeknd – real name Abel Tesfaye – has been working on the film for months, with Ortega and Keoghan said to have signed on after being ‘blown away’ by the script.

Tesfaye, Fahim, Kevin Turen and Harrison Kreiss are producing with Shultz and Ortega executive producing.

The Weekend and singer and producer OPN will score the film.

The Weeknd is also gearing up for his upcoming HBO series The Idol, which he co-stars with former nightclub act Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson, the writer behind Euphoria.

With a cast that includes Lily-Rose Depp, the show follows a popular star who falls for a nightclub owner, according to Deadline.

Schitt’s Creek actor Dan Levy, Simpsons icon Hank Azaria, pop act Troye Sivan and Inglourious Basterds beef Eli Roth are all on The Idol.

Anne Heche also plays a supporting role, in what will be her last TV appearance after her death in a tragic car accident last August.

This comes after the Weeknd made history as the first artist to surpass 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify, days after releasing a remix of his song Die for You featuring Ariana Grande.

The digital music service confirmed the news on Monday, which puts him ahead of his peers, such as Miley Cyrus, who has 82.5 million listeners, Taylor Swift, who has 80.3 million and singer Drake, who has 68.6 million, according to Billboard.

His latest collaboration, which was an instant hit with fans, marks the fourth time he has teamed up with Grande.

His latest big step comes days after the release of his televised concert, Live at SoFi Stadium, which he recorded as one of his best-selling shows in Los Angeles.

In his career, the actor has won four Grammy Awards, 20 Billboard Music Awards and has been nominated for an Oscar and an Emmy.

Back in 2021, the Toronto-based singer’s hit “Blinding Light” became the first song in Billboard Hot 100 history to remain in the Top 10 for a full year.

The hit single from the singer, whose full name is Abel Tesfaye, previously set a record by staying in the Top 5 for 43 weeks.

The previous Top 10 record was held by Post Malone, whose Circles spent 39 weeks in the top half of the charts.

The surprise came after his song and album After Hours was snubbed in the Grammy nominations that year, following his Super Bowl performance.

At the time, the Inaudible Face artist told Billboard that not being nominated felt like an ‘attack’ on his career.

‘We did everything right, I think. I am not a gifted person. I have no pride. People told me that I will be elected. The world told me.

‘Like, “This is it; this is your year.” We are all very confused.’

Since the snub, he refused to submit his music for consideration at the Grammy Awards.

Tesfaye first expressed his displeasure with the Recording Academy in November 2021 after the Grammy nominations were announced.

He tweeted that, ‘Grammys continue to be corrupt. You owe it to me, my fans, to define the industry…’

The singer reiterated his ‘boycott’ months later, telling the New York Times, ‘Due to privacy concerns, I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys.’

The ‘secret committees’ he spoke of are the nominating committees, which oversee the nominees chosen by the members of the Recording Academy and have the final say in the nominees, in what was described as the role, ‘a complex process and assessment process.’
