Google parent company Alphabet is cutting 12,000 jobs in the latest wave of white-collar layoffs sweeping the tech sector, it was revealed last month.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, said the loss affected teams within the company including recruiting and other corporate functions, as well as some engineering and product teams.

The downsizing comes just days after rival Microsoft Corp said it would lay off 10,000 jobs, and Amazon began laying off 18,000 workers as the “wealth” engulfs the world’s biggest companies.

The most in-demand workers now are white-collar workers, while white-collar workers have seen the biggest job losses in the past year.

Those in this field call the phenomenon ‘rich’.
